Steve Rossi, a suave crooner who rose to fame as the straight man to Marty Allen in one of the most successful comedy teams of the 1960s, died on Sunday at a hospice near his home in Las Vegas. He was 82. The cause was cancer, a friend, Michael Flores, said. Rossi was working as a singer in Las Vegas when, at the suggestion of Nat King Cole, he joined forces in the late 1950s with the bug-eyed Mr. Allen, who had recently broken up with his longtime comedy partner. Most of the best gags in the film are in the style that would later be perfected in movies like 'Airplane' and 'The Naked Gun: from the files of Police Squad. There are, however, plenty of sequences where the gags just plain bomb. Marty Allen seems to have gone to the Joe Besser school of comedy shave his head and he'd almost look just like Besser. Marty Allen and Steve Rossi - who used the catchphrase Hello Dere - were a comedy from 1957 until 1968 that appeared on over 700 television shows including 44 appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show. So if you're looking for the worst spy film of the 60s, THE NASTY RABBIT is definitely a contender . The reported breakup of the new Steve Rossi - Joe E. Ross team that made its debut at the Holiday House here a few weeks ago does not come as much of a surprise to those who heard them. They were desperately reaching for security and a need for a complete overhaul of the new act was very evident. Ross has gone back to Hollywood as Rossi continues to look for a replacement for his long-time partner, Pittsburgh's Marty Allen. Two tourists, portrayed by the comic duo Marty Allen and Steve Rossi, are talked into working for the good guys to keep art thieves from stealing the Venus di Milo at the London World Fair. The resulting song, The Last of the Secret Agents, did not appear on the Pete King soundtrack album. At the end of Nancy Sinatra's performance of the title song, she suffers a comic wardrobe malfunction leaving her only clad in bra, panties, stocking and heels. Neal Hefti wrote the song You Are for Steve Rossi, which does appear on the soundtrack, as does the song Don Jose, Ole written by Tolkin and Abbott. Sinatra's title song was reused as an end title song in Bill Murray's The Man Who Knew Too Little. And heres the trailer from their 1966 film The Last of the Secret Agents, which must rank with Rowan and Martins The Maltese Bippy as one of the epic long-buried-because-terrible comedy vehicles. The two movies are very similar. None of these guys were actors they were just comedians and Rossi wasnt even that. It takes a comic actor to carry a whole picture the list is long of the comedians who found that out the hard way. The discovery seems to have broken Allen and Rossi up the first time. They couldnt get any further together, so shortly thereafter they went their seperate ways. Allen & Rossi were a p
